King Satan – The Devils Evangelion

Finland’s industrial metal heretics KING SATAN will release the band’s fourth fulllength album, entitled “The Devil’s Evangelion”, on November 8 via Noble Demon. Founded in late 2015, KING SATAN presents a genre-fluid extreme metal spectacle that fuses electro-industrial, symphonic black metal, and death metal elements with the raw energy of rock’n’roll, emerging as a unique blend between shameless shock rock and chaotic avant-garde theater.

This genre-fluid group is the brainchild of enigmatic artist Mr. King Aleister Satan (Henget, Saturnian Mist), which has evolved from its electro-aggrotech origins into a full-throttle industrial metal band over the years. The act’s vision of extreme metal brings forth an anarchistic blend of carnivalesque artistry, absurdist dark comedy, occult intrigue, and in-depth philosophical ponderings, served in an intoxicating blend of rocking dance beats, thought-provoking lyrics, mesmerizing melodies, and addictive hooks the band themselves have titled as ‘death metal disco’. A fusion fit for both dance floors and mosh pits.

Delving deeper into the musical and conceptual realms, King Aleister Satan teases details about the forthcoming album: “The Devil’s Evangelion will be a concept album concentrating on the duality and the paradoxical nature of reality. This concept stems from a trickster-like narrative that becomes convinced about being possessed by the Devil, leading to an experience of reality through the Devil’s eyes.”

With all that being said, it is about time to dive straight into the fourth studio album from King Satan. The Devils Evangelion contains 11 brand new songs, a colaboration with Austrian Nachtmahr and several songs are released as single’s including King Satan styled videoclips. Notable in that aspect is the colab between King Satan and Nachtmahr as the videoclip is best described as “South Park styled blasphemy”!

“The Devil’s Evangelion” opens with “New Aeon Gospel.” King Satan released this track as a single, accompanied by an award-winning music video. The next track, “Abyss of the Souls,” is in many ways a quintessential King Satan song, featuring recognizable composition, powerful lyrics, and that signature industrial sound. The guitar solo stands out, and the song’s tempo is fast enough to get you headbanging with a fierce expression, but not so fast that it gives you whiplash!

“A Death Before Death” is the fifth track on the album, and unlike the previous four, it has a somewhat slower pace, which is a welcome change after the powerful, fast-paced tracks that precede it. What really stands out in this song is the clever wordplay in the lyrics. Of course, frontman King Aleister Satan has already established himself as a talented composer and lyricist, but this song takes things to a whole new level. One standout line, “Choose your thoughts with extra care, as those are what you will become,” adds depth to the music and highlights how King Satan continues to avoid conventional paths, finding a modus operandi that fits him perfectly.

“Destroy the World” is yet another showcase of the absurdity and intelligence that King Satan brings to their music. The composition gives the listener the feeling of almost listening to a heavy metal ballad, similar to those often heard in modern heavy metal. The piano and keys (fantastically played, as always, by Hekate Boss), the duet singing in parts (again with Hekate Boss), and the overall setup of the song leave the listener feeling somewhat melancholic and longing for something sweet and lovable. And then the lyrics hit you:

“To make the world a better place
is to dream of the dawn of a nuclear war
Push the button of human extinction
and take us all closer to ‘God’”

Another song worth mentioning is “The Devils and Saints.” In true King Satan style, the music is industrial-tinged, with the keys (a defining element of King Satan’s sound) playing a prominent role. However, this song is slightly different from others as it presents a conversation between a priest and a fiend.

The album concludes with “Epilogue (The Phoenix Song),” a track that is so out of context in many ways that it perfectly fits the King Satan ethos. It has a jazzy feel, with slow, captivating guitar, laid-back jazzy drumming, and yet the energetic growl of Mr. King Satan himself. In many ways, it’s a song that doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the album, but for that very reason, it becomes the perfect closer to “The Devil’s Evangelion.”

CONCLUSION

“Absurdism combined with deep, often confronting lyrics wrapped in a really holistic package, perhaps closest to Industrial metal, is exactly what King Satan aims to bring to the table—and they certainly delivered! With the release of their fourth full-length album, King Satan has cemented their position as one of the new leading forces of modern Industrial metal, wrapped in a really genre-fluid style!! While the industrial vibe is dominant on this album, black and death metal elements are unmistakably present. The touches of disco and rock ‘n’ roll further contribute to the unique sound that King Satan is known for.

The album itself is well thought-out, with well-placed tempo changes that make The Devils Evangelion feel cohesive. The concept behind the album, exploring the duality and paradoxical nature of reality, shines through strongly. As mentioned before, the lyrics are intricately crafted and carry multiple layers of meaning. Another defining characteristic of this energetic Finnish band is the contributions of Hekate Boss. In addition to playing the keys, she provides backup and duet vocals on this album.

A final mention goes to frontman Mr. King Aleister Satan. Not only is he responsible for the lyrics, but he also creates many of the music videos and is an incredible stage presence. The lyrics of this album, along with those from previous albums, will be released in printed form together with the album on November 8th, 2024.
