Brief interview with Cyclopean Walls

In the middle of the pandemic in 2019, French based Cyclopean Walls emerged. A solo-project started by composing artist Yiannis Tziallas. Under his own name, Tziallas released an EP named Embrace the Mythos. After this release a drummer and vocalist (Tziallas plays guitar and bass himself) joined him, and the line-up was complete. Recently Cyclopean Walls released their debut album. About this album, and some other things, I had a chat with founder and composing artist Yiannis Tziallas.

Hey, thanks for taking the time for an interview with Maizter Underground!
How are you doing? Covid and all.

Thanks for having us. Well, with the vaccination advancing the situation is getting better in France and everywhere else. So all we can do is hope for the best…

How did the band came to exist?

“The band” I’d say is more of a personal project which started during 2019. As a composer I’d like to work in a metal context because I believe that the epic fantasy storytelling works great with the genre. It was the EP “Embrace The Mythos” (2020) that started it all.

Can you introduce the bandmembers one by one?

Yes, it’s Raphael Gazal on vocals and Jonas Schütz on drums.

You guys call yourself Cyclopean Walls. How did you come up with this name and what does it mean?

It has to do with H.P. Lovecraft and his mythos. Metaphorically speaking, it has to do also with all the unanswered questions regarding our past, the remnants of history, experiences, things we see or feel, but we cannot exactly explain (or remember) how they came to be.

Can you tell me something about the journey this far? Where did the creativity came from for your first “own work” and who (if any) did inspire you?

The work of H.P. Lovecraft has always been a close companion from back when I was a teenager. As for the music the inspiration comes from bands like Payne’s Gray, Fates Warning, Rage, Mekong Delta but also from composers such as Vangelis and from the Greek modal musical tradition.

What are the (longtime) goals with Cyclopean Walls?

To compose and perform interesting heavy metal music and find the financial means to support this activity. I think it’s a goal for every band on the planet during this complicated period.

Are there are singles/ an album coming up?

Yes, our full-length debut Enter The Dreamlands just came out (29 October 2021) by Steel Gallery Records.

Do you have any festivals/gigs/shows planned?

As we are an international project from France, Germany and Brazil, it’s very difficult to perform live. But for me playing live is of an outmost importance. So, there are different ideas on the table, I think that we’ll find a way to get on stage in 2022-23.

Thats sounds promising! Hopefully we will meet soon the road! For now, Thank you for your time! On behalf of everyone at Maizter Underground I want to wish you all the best with all you guys take on in the future!
