TUNGSTEN are a Swedish symphonic metal band formed by ex-HAMMERFALL drummer Anders Johansson and his sons Niklas and Karl in 2016, completed by vocalist Mike Andersson. With their technical virtuosity and captivating compositions, the band have made a name in the international metal scene, and with their album “The Grand Inferno,” they will undoubtedly enrich the metal landscape. The fourth release of Tungsten is set to be released on November 8th, 2024.

With the upcoming release of The Grand Inferno, Tungsten is about drop their fourth studio album. This time around they have joined forces with Reigning Phoenix Music in order to deliver a brand new chapter in Tungsten’s journey towards metal domination!
The Grand Inferno contains 11 brand new tracks and has a total playing time just shy of 45 minutes. In order to promote the upcoming album, and to give anyone interested an idea of what The Grand Inferno is all about, Tungsten has released several single’s accompanied by videoclips. Ranging from “old school” videoclips all the way to computer animated videoclips!
The album opens with the song Anger. A heavy and melodic song, completely in line with Tungsten’s sound on previous albums. A catchy melody is accompanied by heavy, yet recognisable, guitar sound from guitarslinger Niklas Johansson. The growls from bassguitarist Karl Johansson give this song that extra punch.
The title track The Grand Inferno is arguably one of Tungsten’s best songs to date. The fourth track on the album gives you everything Tungsten stands for. An epic build up leads into a heavy yet symphonic part and culminates in an unmistakable Tungsten sound. The powerfull and destinctive voice of powerhouse Mike Andersson sets the stage for an impressive title track.
Vantablack is another track that tickels the imagination. The composition of the song makes me think of early Rammstein songs as the drums, guitar and drums are short, spicy and catchy. The combination of growls and clean vocals are becoming more and more accepted in the world of metal, and Tungsten has already established firmly their capacity to implement those into their own sound. To give this track the exposure it deserves, Tungsten has released a videoclip that suits these energetic Swedes like a glove.

Tungsten is known for their catchy music and always leave room to experiment in their tracks. Sometimes it’s a play with lyrics, other times they add extra “sounds”to their tracks. In the latter you can put Me, Myself, My Enemy. Strong lyrics, again accompanied by an industrial feel of music composition, makes this song one you want to hear live on stage!
The final track on this gem from Sweden is called Angel Eyes. A little more keys are found in this song and perhaps this track feels more “mainstream” than other tracks on this album. No real highs or lows are found in this song but sang with so much gusto and believe that Angel Eyes is yet another mark of the abilties Tungesten can bring to the table. Again the voice of Mike Andersson stands out as the power and range of this energetic frontman shines trough in every aspect!
CONCLUSION:
With the release of The Grand Inferno, Tungsten marks the beginning of a new era with a new label. However, the music itself sounds like Tungsten in every concievable way. For those of you who have listened to the previous albums will notice slight differences in the composition. For example the drumming of living legend Anders Johansson is more clean and “short” in comparison to previous albums. Not worse or better, but different. When it comes to the composition of the songs the band has decided to give this album a somewhat more progressive character. On previous albums such as Bliss, there was a more Industrial metal approach. Tungsten has found a way to combine those elements and bring them together in their own Tungsten style. In other words, it sounds like Tungsten in every way, and yet they have added another layer to their music!
The Grand Inferno will be released as Digipack, Vinyl, Limited Edition Coloured Vinyl and on streaming services on November 8th, 2024.
