Nordman at Louis De Geer concert and congress, Norrköping

So it was time for a concert again and tonight’s show is Nordman at Louis De Geer concert and congress, Flygeln in Norrköping. To the Swedish audience, Nordman is a duo that is well-known. They started back in 1994 and with Py Bäckman (known as a member of Dan Hylander & Raj Montana Band but also a solo artist) came songs as “Förlist”, “Vandraren” and “Laglöst land”. For those who like Ritchie Blackmore you might have heard the cover of Vandraren with the English title “The Journey Man”.

Nordman is a duo as Mats Wester is playing the instrument Nyckelharpa (key harp) which is very common in Swedish traditional folk music, and Håkan Hemlin is the singer. During the 1990’s Nordman had several hits, they were competitors in the Eurovision Song Contest several times and toured a lot in the Nordic countries. Mats had a dream of combining folk music with rock music and he first met Håkan in his studio where Håkan was with his band Bye Bye to record a demo tape.

When it turned 1998 Mats felt he couldn’t continue Nordman anymore as Håkan suffered and battled through a hard addiction to heroine. It took seven years before Mats got the phone call he so long had waited for as it was Håkan calling and he delivered the words: ”I am clean!”  In 2014 Håkan Hemlin released his biography “Förlist” which tells the story of his life right up to that point! He wrote it together with the rock journalist Anders Tegnér.

When 2019 came the time had come to  celebrate the fact that Nordman runs 25 years as a duo but covid put an end to the celebration and it was nearly the definite ending for Nordman, when they got a call from Swedish TV 4. It was the huge Swedish TV show “Så mycket bättre”. A television show where artists in different genres meet at Gotland during a week and interpreted each other’s music.

The name “Nordman” is a timeless name as its meaning can be of a man in the here and now telling stories but it also refers to a man from history itself. Nordman’s lyrics give a feeling of stories both from the past and the present. The vibes from folk music makes them timeless.

The concert itself was one of those shows where positive energy just flows. If you ever visited good concert, you know the feeling. It was cheering ,hand claps and sing-a-long from first, all the way to the very last song. It clearly showed that Nordman had fun on stage and that they were touched by the audience’s love and enthusiasm as Nordman played their huge hits combined with newer material! Nordman was given standing ovations through several songs and even though it was a walk down memory lane, it will be a night that remains in my heart and soul forever!

Yours truly!
