In early 2016 Barbara Black began her career as a solo singer together with drummer Nitro Destruction and guitarist Javier Peláez, premiering their EP “Spiritual Rock” where gospel blends with rock, blues and country. Since April 2020 the band is part of the Greek agency Angels PR Music Promotions and through them Maizter Underground got the chance to sit down with stunning lead vocalist Barbara for a nice talk!
Hey, thanks for taking the time for an interview with Maizter Underground!
How are you doing? Covid and all.
Luckily we are all well and safe, thank you!
How did the band came to exist?
Nitro (drummer), Javier (guitar) and I used to rehearse in the same music room, some years ago, with our previous bands. We met there and got realised that we had very similar music interests, so we decided to start a project together. We have a nice chemistry.
Can you introduce the band members one by one?
Nitro Destruction is our wild drummer, Javier Peláez and Carlos Cone are the brilliant guitars and Niño Buffalo Márquez is an eartquake on stage!!
You guys call yourself BARBARA BLACK How did you come up with this name and what does it mean?
It is really simple, it´s my real name. Nitro, Javi and I decided we liked this name for the whole band.
Can you tell me something about the journey this far? Where did the creativity came from for your first “own work” and who (if any) did inspire you?
I like to be inspired by other artists. For example, writers like Poe or Bécquer influenced me a lot, characters from series or movies (The Queen of the Damned, Interview with the Vampire, Jeepers Creepers, Game of Thrones), photographers like Nat Enémede, Javier Bragado or Tony Madrid transmit me a lot; illustrators like B. Lacombe, tattoo artists like Kat Von D or Maria Ruz, fashion designers like Palomo Spain or even video games like Dark Country. During these last days I´ve been inspired by three painters: Guillermo Lorca Garcia, Antonio García Villarán and Odd Nerdrum. All of this helps me to create the visual, lirical and auditory world that surrounds our band.
What are the (long time) goals with BARBARA BLACK?
First of all, enjoy creating a good quality artistic work together. After that, live all the musical experiences that this can bring you: recording in the studio, connecting with the public from different countries or touring are some examples. Of course it would be wonderful if we could make a living out of it one day. Without a doubt, our most desired goal is to be part of a music festival in any country in the world, we would really love that.
Are there are singles/ an album coming up?
We have recently released our album Love, Death and Flies and some of its singles: Damnified, Vampire Love or Tiger Tamer. We are working with our label Rock Estatal Records and our Promoters and Management Angels PR Music Promotion. We currently are starting to compose some new songs for the next abum. J
