Brief interview with Echoes Of Decay

When you think of Greece, you think of ancient time’s, impressive relics from a long gone era, good weather and great food. However, this Mediterranean country brings forth a steady stream of talented artists and bands. At the end of 2017 Echoes Of Decay was formed in Thessaloniki, Greece. A five piece doom/death metal outfit that are working hard on their fourth EP, which is set for release on April 15th. About time we at Maizter Underground reached out to them.

Hey, thanks for taking the time for an interview with Maizter Underground!
How are you doing? Covid and all.

Hello! First of all, we would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to promote the band through this interview. We are doing fine! Despite the pandemic and it’s consequences we are in a very creative phase as a band. At the current moment we are promoting our forthcoming EP and we are planning some live shows, which we have missed a lot.

How did the band came to exist?

The band was found back in 2017 by Alkis, Nick and John in order to create original material and explore new musical paths, but most of all to express themselves through music. Shortly Yannis joined the band and after some line-up changes Thanos become the band’s bassist. Since then the band’s line-up is stable.

Can you introduce the band-members one by one?

The band consists of five members. Alkis Stamos and Nick Papadopoulos are the guitarists and main composers of the band. They love using effects pedals which define the atmosphere of our music. John Georgiades is our Vocalist and main lyricist of the band. Yannis Boutsioukis is the man behind the drums and last but not least Thanos Pallidis is our beloveth bass player.

You guys call yourself Echoes Of Decay. How did you come up with this name and what does it mean?

We wanted a name that will express the the repetitive decay, the never ending sorrow, the remnants of pain that haunt us. We also wanted the band’s name to sound a little abstract so when Yannis came up with the idea we instantly felt that it was the perfect name for our musical vessel.

Can you tell me something about the journey this far? Where did the creativity came from for your first “own work” and who (if any) did inspire you?

So far we have released our debut album Dive Into Darkness back in 2019 and we have played quite a few live shows in our hometown, Thessaloniki (Greece). The source of our creativity is life itself, with all the agony, the pain, the frustration that surrounds each one of us. The main subjects of our lyrics are depression, suicide, death, loss and mental illness. We are inspired by the pioneers of the Death/Doom scene (Paradise Lost, Katatonia etc..), by artists that experiment and break the boundaries.

What are the (longtime) goals with Echoes Of Decay?

Well, our longtime goal is to reach to as many people as possible. For us it is very important that people connect with our music. We are also dreaming of playing live outside of our country especially if we get a chance to play alongside artists we like and admire.

Are there are singles or an album coming up?

At the current moment we are working on promoting our for coming EP ‘Delirium Of Madness which will be out on April 15th and it will be available via Bandcamp, YouTube and probably other music platforms. It consists of four songs we worked on during the pandemic. It is an independent release as was also our debut album but we are also thinking of joining a record label in the future.

Do you have any festivals/gigs/shows planned?

Our next performance will probably be at hometown, Thessaloniki, Greece. After that we are planning on playing live at other 2-3 cities in Greece.. We also working on performing on foreign festivals in 2023 but nothing sure yet!!!

A lot of good things are in the works for Echoes Of Decay then! That’s great! I can promise you we will keep an eye out for you guys! For now, I want to thank you for your time and on behalf of the entire crew at Maizter Underground we want to wish Echoes Of Decay all the best with all you take on in the future!
