Hailing from the Land of a Thousand Lakes, King Satan has firmly established themselves as a powerfull and energetic force in the metal scene. With their recognisable sound, energetic performances and an “in your face” mentallity it’s hard not to be noticed and it shows in charting releases and award winning video’s for example. Now the time has come for King Satan to release their brand new album named Black Magic Abraxas.

King Satan is a genre-bending industrial metal band from Finland, created by enigmatic artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer King Aleister Satan. Founded in 2015 at the City of Tampere, King Satan has steadily carved out a distinct identity within the alternative, industrial and extreme metal scenes, gaining loyal following through relentless touring, provocative theatrics and a mercurial sound resonating somewhere between avantgarde and shock rock, the band mischievously dubs themselves as ‘death metal disco’!
With multiple full-length albums, charting releases and award-winning music videos the band continues to expand their unholy metal carnival beyond the boundaries of kitsch entertainment and mystic arts in the name of the wicked one!
With the upcoming release of Black Magic Abraxas, King Satan is about to release their 5th studio album and I got a chance to dive into this latest work of the metallers from Finland. With the videoreleases of the singles, Fire in the Hole, Black Magick Rock ‘N’ Roll (feat. Erja Lyytinen) and Abraxas Rising (feat. Saku Solin a.k.a. Shag-U) we already got a taste of the new album and it promises alot!
The album contains 9 new songs that above all illustrate the distinctive sound of King Satan. The raw and captivating voice of King Aleister Satan combined with the wide vocal range that Hekate “Kate” Boss brings to the table, is a signature sound for King Satan. The energetic and uptempo drums, shredding guitar riffs and storming bass give them that little bit of extra. A special mention here for the keyboards that are present in each and every song as they divine the sound of King Satan. A perfect example of this latest remark is arguably Down by the Sins. Lyric wise its King Satan to a tee, and although the tempo isn’t as high as other songs on the album, it showcases perfectly King Satan’s sound.

Although the album isn’t overflowing with new sounds and directions, King Satan has perfected their sound as it is. When you have found your sound, there is no need to branch out in every direction. It’s more a case of perfecting the sound and find different ways of bringing this sound to your audience. Abraxas Rising is a perfect example of this. During their extensive touring King Satan has shared stage’s with bands like Gothminister, Deathstars and Turmion Kätilöt. In Abraxas Rising the second singing voice is also the second singing voice In Turmion Kätilöt ánd the leadsinger in Fear of Domination, Saku Solin. Again a true King Satan song that is my personal favorite of this album. A song that screams to be played in front of a big moving mass that’s ready to party!
A song that has impressed me alot is Far Beyond Good and Evil. The general feeling this song gives me is hard to describe. The tempo is just quick enough to head bang too, at times it feels chaotic without being chaotic and towards the end it has swallowed you whole and spit you out. You either hate it or love it, and I definitely love it!
All things considered this is a top notch album from this Finnish 5 piece band. Building on their previous work King Satan has a recognisable sound that finds its way in the keyboards, the clean guitar play and the voices from both King Aleister Satan and Hekate “Kate” Boss. The album is a musical showcase of King Satan’s abilities and in my opinion their best to date. Their previous album The Devils Evangelion already hit the right buttons with me, but Black Magick Abraxas tops that. Not becauase its differences to the previous album, as it is King Satan in every way, but better. Simply better, more complete. From experience I can say King Satan has a stage precense I’ve hardly seen before and they deserve big stages and loud and party-ing crowds! I personnaly cannot wait to hear and see the songs from Black Magic Abraxas performed live on stage. Thats where the music and the band come together in a way it fully deserves!
