In 2016 in Greece, NYXBORN emerged. A solo project initiated by Greek native John “Stormrider” Skadalis. NYXBORN is a heavy/progressive metal project with influences from other genres that create a unique and recognisable sound! After releasing two albums, NYXBORN has released its third FULL LENGTH album named Demonologio on the 30th of October 2021. I sat down with John to find out a little bit more about NYXBORN!
Hey, thanks for taking the time for an interview with Maizter Underground! How are you doing? Covid and all.
Thanks for having me. All good.
How did the band came to excist?
Well, it’s a solo project so I just thought of it and here it is!
Can you introduce yourself?
It’s John “Stormrider” Skandalis on all instruments and vocals.
You call yourself NYXBORN. How did you come up with this name and what does it mean?
It’s a compound word that comes from the ancient Greek word “Νύξ” or “Νύχτα” in modern, which means night and Born (γεννημένος). So it means, born in the night (Νυχτογέννητος). It was borrowed from a popular card game actually.
Can you tell me something about the journey this far? Where did the creativity came from for your first “own work” and who (if any) did inspire you?
It’s a lonely journey I guess, but not in a bad way. When you don’t talk you tend to listen more I guess. I started playing on my own, on a small classic guitar that my grandpa bought for my brother. I didn’t have many influences then (I only listened to Iron Maiden fanatically), but I wrote many riffs that are still used until this day on my 3rd upcoming album. There was an originality in them I think, that later did not exist so much in my inspirations, because I listened to many more bands and got influenced by the likes of Judas Priest, Fates Warning, Iced Earth, Mastodon, Death, Black metal etc. Every album has its own if you notice.
What are the (longtime) goals with NYXBORN?
Writing music and people appreciating it. Thats all.
Is there any (new) material of NYXBORN that people should know about?
Yes, our single Exiled In Arrakis was released a month ago for the upcoming Album “Δαιμονολόγιο” (Demonologio) which has been released by now ( Official release was set on October 30, 2021)
Do you have any festivals/gigs/shows planned?
Maybe one day with a full band haha…
