Tungsten was formed in 2016 when drummer Anders Johansson (Hammerfall, Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Rising Force, Manowar) asked his sons Nick Johansson (Guitars) and Karl Johansson (Bass & Screams) if they were interested in starting a brand new band with him.
Tungsten themselves describe their music to be “melodic, industrial power metal with hints of Northern Folk music“.
Tungsten’s first album We Will Rise was released in September 2019 and the song The Fairies Dance is close to pass 3 million streams on Spotify alone.
About a year later, in November 2020, Tungsten released their second album called Tundra. The song King of Shadows was chosen to be the first single for the second album and also this song has become an “anthem song“ for Tungsten when performing live on stage.
Following the worldwide pandemic Tungsten was forced to cancel gigs and shows, but subsequently gained time to work on their third album which has been named Bliss and is set for release to the public on the 17th of June 2022 through Arising Empire. With the release of the first single Come This Way, accompanied by a brand new clip, Tungsten set the first step towards said album release. What followed where March Along and the title track Bliss. Again these single’s where released with a video clip! Now the time has come for Tungsten to release the fourth track, On The Sea.
These talented Swedes have made it one of their characteristics to make their music filled with catchy melodies and lyrics, and On The Sea is a seamless fit with the previous songs. Not in any way it sounds the same like the previous released single’s but it’s unmistakable Tungsten. On The Sea is really accessible and has a nice tempo to it. As always the lyrics are well thought out and the voice of leadsinger Mike Andersson is fantastic once again. The guitar solo played by leadguitarist Niklas Johansson is a nice bonus, the “extra sounds” left and right in the song are well placed and the song itself invites the listener to raise up their glasses of beer and sing along outloud! Perhaps On The Sea is best described as a true Tungsten song taken to the ocean. As always Tungsten has included a (great looking) videoclip for On The Sea.
With the release of the fourth single of the upcoming album Bliss, Tungsten has given us a good insight into what the album is all about and with the release of On The Sea it feels for me, as if Tungsten has conquered another obstacle on their way to become a well-known, respected and loved metalband. Catchy music, great lyrics and well placed solo’s are already part of Tungsten’s repertoire and they already found a way to translate that into good and lasting music. With On The Sea Tungsten ticks that final box for me in terms of crossing into other genre’s. It still is Tungsten but this time around it sounds like Alestorm have joined almighty Tungsten on the waters for this one!
